Mr Thompson is one of the founding directors of Margules Groome. He has over 15 years’ experience in forestry operations, forest inventory and resource assessment, GIS and mapping, forest due diligence and valuation and investment analysis. His career began in forest value chain research before progressing to an operations role in New Zealand log production. In 2001 Mr Thompson furthered his studies through the Securities Institute in the UK to focus on investment analysis. From 2002 until 2005 he developed skills in investment analysis, portfolio development, valuation, and due diligence through employment with various investment firms in the UK. From 2005 until 2009 Mr Thompson was based in Melbourne, Australia, providing forestry due diligence and investment analysis consulting services within Australia and abroad.
Since returning to New Zealand in 2009, Mr Thompson has been involved in a range of forestry consulting services including GIS and mapping, forest inventory and analysis, forest valuation, forest carbon consulting, and forest management. His experience covers various types of plantation and natural forests spanning Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, Guatemala, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Peru, Suriname, and the UK.
In mid-2013, Mr Thompson founded Weald after a two-year employment as Senior Consultant with Pöyry Management Consulting (NZ) Limited. Within his most recent role at Pöyry, he focussed on projects requiring IPO appraisals, annual appraisals, strategic development and vendor and purchaser due diligence.
Mr Thompson holds a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry Science (University of Canterbury, New Zealand), a Master of Business Administration (University of New England, Australia), and is a Registered Member of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry.
